Fossil Fish Wyoming - USA
Fossil
Details
Its disk-like shape, similar to that of a perch, gives it a different look from the other species found in the lakes. Perhaps Priscacara may be restricted to the Eocene as suggested by lack of fossils from other geological series. Priscacara most likely lived in schools and fed on gastropods and crustaceans. Its spines may have evolved to inhibit predation by the voracious Diplomystus and Phareodus. It was a medium-small fish (10 to 15 cm long) but could reach up to 40cm in length. It is very common in the lakes but it is rare in sand-rich layers.
